was born in Lienz/East Tyrol. He received his first cello lessons with Reinhold Salcher at the age of ten in Lienz. From 1985 to 1991 he was a student of Max Engel in Innsbruck and subsequently went to Vienna to study under Valentin Erben and Wolfgang Aichinger at the University of Music and Performing Arts. Following master classes for violoncello and chamber music, his tutors include Rudolf Leopold and Christophe Coin as well as György Kurtág and members of the ‚Amadeus Quartett’ and the ‚Borodin Quartett’. In 1991 he was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and from 1992 to 1995 of the Jeunesse Orchestra Vienna. He has been a member of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra since 1997 and cello soloist of the Vienna Classical Players since 2003. Apart from his orchestra work he devotes himself with extraordinary dedication to chamber music, even in unusual casts (amongst other things as member of ‚Ensemble Cellino’ and the ensemble ‚Acht Cellisten der Wiener Symphoniker’).
